How do I get a refund on a lemon car?

My husband bought a cash car for my step daughter about a month ago. Since then the key has got stuck in the steer and we had to get that taking off, and the motor has went out. Of course the dealer wants to charge us to replace the motor but he said the car would last at least 6 months. I don't think we should pay to replace the motor. I think the dealership should take the loss or refund our money. Is there a law for this situation?

  1. yes, there are lemon laws,
  2. If it is a used car, the lemon law does not apply. If you have documentation of claims that the dealer made, and you can prove that the dealer has not honored those claims, then you can take him to court. That's about the only choice you have.
  3. Depends on your state. Look here: http://www.lemonlawamerica.com/
  4. I'm guessing there was no warranty. If you bought this without some type of warranty, you're stuck. Sorry : (
  5. If it is a new car then the dealer should lemon law it for you. If it is used and the dealer didn't put a used warranty or guarantee on it, you are pretty much on your own. If it is an older car with higher miles, these things happen in used cars
  6. check the warranty and deal you struck with the dealership. Then consult an attorney regarding used cars with lemon laws. Lemon laws in some areas only apply to new cars.../
  7. Lemon Laws only apply to brand new cars. You'll need to take your chances in small claims court...and Good Luck!
  8. The law is you bought a used car "as is" and you have no recourse. You could have had the vehicle inspected by a mechanic before buying it. Lemon laws don't cover most used vehicles and are designed to protect the buyer from serious, chronic defects. There is no protection for buying a used piece of junk. Let the buyer beware.
